World of sports
IN ENGLISH, THE BUSINESS WORLD DRAWS SIGNIFICANT INSPIRATION FROM THE WORLD OF SPORTS, WHICH IS REFLECTED IN MANY COMMONLY USED EXPRESSIONS. WE HAVE COMPILED A LIST OF OVER 130 SUCH EXPRESSIONS, COMPLETE WITH EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES.
OUT OF LEFT FIELD.
This expression is used when something is unexpected, unusual, surprising, or completely disconnected from what people anticipated. It can also describe an idea or comment that seems strange or unrealistic.
The expression comes from the world of sports, more specifically baseball, where left field is traditionally considered farther from the main action on the field. As a result, someone who is 'out of left field' is seen as being removed from what is happening or thinking in a completely different direction.
Examples of use in a business context:
Their acquisition offer came completely out of left field because we never thought they were interested in our company.
I was happy about the promotion, but it came out of left field because I didn't even know I was being considered for the position.
So, we're expanding into the Australian market this year? That came out of left field.
